Can you handle the heat?

If you’re anything like us at Beach Butlerz, you’re tired of making the same New Years resolutions. Join a gym, lose 10 pounds and get swimsuit ready are wonderful ideas, but we happen to believe trying new programs to keep your body working hard is the best resolution there is.

A fitness craze that has been around for a while is picking up steam- bikram yoga. This unique routine lasts 90 minutes and involves 26 yoga postures designed to work every organ and muscle in your body. Oh, and did we mention the yoga room is kept at a constant 105 degrees?

The theory behind “hot yoga” is that the intense heat encourages deeper stretching and less stress on your muscles and joints. While it is not an exercise regime intended for everyone, the benefits can be great for all systems of the body. And, bikram yoga burns over 600 calories a class (not bad!).

If you are interested in more information about bikram yoga, check out these websites: hot yoga and bikram yoga.  If you don’t think bikram yoga is for you, make sure to check back soon. We will be featuring some killer interviews and workouts in the coming weeks starting off with our LEADING LADIES FITNESS CHALLENGE beginning first week of March. Happy exercising!

5 Freaking Festive Phenomena

There is much about festive phenomena that we could do without after December 25.  We’ve entitled the following five, ‘5 Freaking Festive Phenomena’, and rightfully so freaking weird.

  1. Your pants fit tighter, and not in a sexy way.
  2. Whose turn is it to take down the holiday decorations? I put them up!
  3. The tree, ‘inside your home’, is no longer heavenly scented and is just a fire hazard waiting to happen.
  4. Lots of checks in the checkbook but no money in the checking account. How can that be?
  5. What?! – VACATION OVER? Ugh…..

No worries. Spring and Summer coming up next. Time to fit in some Cardio Punch workouts with Beach Butlerz out on the beach! See you on the beach soon.

Shameless Traditions And Proud of It!

The holidays are inundated with festive, sometimes seemingly pointless, traditions. We at Beach Butlerz love the holidays, and have provided our list of favorite, shamelessly wonderful, and at times tacky, holiday traditions.

1) Watching Elf or any other Christmas movie every week for the entire month of December. If you can’t do it now, when can you?

2) Playing “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey, or any other equally fabulous, holiday song… on repeat. The music is a part of the season, plus she ROCKS!

3) Using the holidays as an excuse to bake excessively, and subsequently eat all the goodies. Calories don’t count in December (right?).

4) Driving around looking at Christmas lights, made even better when accompanied by hot chocolate or hot apple cider. Mmmmmm.

5) Wearing and enjoying holiday sweaters (cozy!), matching pajamas, or any other festive ensemble. If you ever have an excuse to “dress the part”, it’s now!

Let us know your shameless holiday tradition. Maybe we'll give it a try.
We wish you all an awesome Holiday - hope that Santa brings your lots of toys. Cheers!

Two Unique Gift Ideas for Neighbors, Teachers, and Friends

The holiday season puts us in a terrific mood- the food, the songs, the decorations, the…everything but, there is also a bit of angst associated with this time of year.  This is because we generally have NO CLUE what to gift people.  Thus, we have been looking for ways to get creative with gifts, and since Beach Butlerz is beach savvy, we thought we would share two amazing nautical DYI gift ideas that would otherwise cost a very shiny penny in the stores.

- A succulent-filled seashell: This gift is really quick, easy, and an inexpensive way to create a super unique decoration.  Start out by spending some time out at the beach searching for a large sea shell or stop by the seashell shop.  There is an awesome one in Morro Bay, California.  It has the largest selection of seashells that we’ve ever seen.  Once you’ve found the perfect shell, add some potting soil and a gorgeous succulent from your own backyard.  Check out this picture of a couple we saw at a craft faire.

- A shell-lined picture frame or mirror: Seriously, if you take the time to do this well, this gift looks like you purchased it from a boutique store.  Start out by deciding on the size of your mirror or frame. Then, head to the nearest beach (Avila!) and start gathering unique shells and rocks.  Always pick up more than you think you need, just in case. Once you’ve got your bag of goodies, head home and locate a glue gun. Design a pattern, or lay the shells/rocks on the frame randomly. Allow the creation to dry and insert any extra shells wherever there’s a gap. Viola…Perfect gift idea done!

Have a better gift idea? Please share with us all here.

Missing California!

Hey guys!

I'm at school in Vancouver, BC and it's a snowy winter day!  We're in exam lockdown- I just finished a chemistry final and in a few hours I'll take my indigenous history final, but all I can think of is my flight home back to sunny CA in less than a week!  My roommate and I are even heading over to a California Mexican restaurant tonight to get a little taste of home!

I always forget how lucky I am to live in the most beautiful place in the world... the Central Coast was recently determined to be the happiest place in North America!  On the agenda when I get home is an amazing bonfire on the Avila dog beach.

Remember, just because it's winter doesn't mean you can't enjoy the beach!  According to my go-to weather site, it's currently 75 degrees at my house in Cal right now!

Can't wait for this summer, you all better come out to the beach!

Mini FREE Central Coast Adventures – Have you done these?

If not, then these are a must. The Central Coast has unique mini-adventures and attractions that make weekend day trips unique and fun and FREE.

Monarch Butterfly Grove, Pismo Beach: Monarch butterflies migrate to Pismo Beach every year to escape the chilling temperatures of the north. The butterflies can be seen in the eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach from October-February, so hurry up to make sure you don’t miss them. http://www.monarchbutterfly.org

Bob Jones Trail, Avila Beach: Named for Bob Jones, advocate for the conservancy of San Luis Obispo Creek, the Bob Jones Trail is an 8-mile route linking San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach.  The serene and picturesque trail is perfect for biking, skating, jogging, or walking, and is suitable for individuals of all fitness levels and ages.  There is even a great deli located halfway along the trail.  http://www.lcslo.org/bob_jones.html

Morro Rock, Morro Bay: Also sometimes referred to as the “Gibralter of the Pacific”, Morro Rock is a part of the [extinct] nine sisters volcanic peaks, which stretch 12 miles- from Morro Bay to San Luis Obispo.  Morro Rock is also a state preserve, home to nesting Peregrine Falcons and has a nearby playground for the kids.

Elephant Seals, Piedras Blancas: In late October and early November subadult males begin to snooze and are very playful.  Around Thanksgiving adult males begin to arrive to stake out their territories, heralding the beginning of the birthing and breading season.  Pregnant females come in December. www.elephantseal.org

Dinosaur Park, Shell Beach: Dinosaurs in Shell Beach? Don’t be fooled by the name; Dinosaur Park does not actually house any dinosaurs at all. Local folklore holds that H. Douglas Brown began building a concrete dinosaur in 1948, but the project was never completed. Now, the park is popular for “walkers, photographers, dog lovers, joggers and fishing enthusiasts.”

When the weather isn’t quite ideal for a Beach Butlerz experience, then you can take advantage of all of the unique attractions that shape the beautiful beach cities in this region. And, have fun with it!

6 Autumn Weather Beach Day Suggestions

California is infamous for its sunny days, warm weather, and amazing beaches. When it’s hot, most natives grab a towel, a swim suit, some sun block, a pack of friends, and head to the nearest sandy shore.

The Central California coast is a beautiful place to be, even though it’s not hot enough to lounge on the beach year-round, it is still sunny out and you can catch a warm autumn day here and there. Below are Beach Butlerz’s favorite beach activities to be enjoyed when the weather cools.

1)      BEACH BONFIRE. S’mores…need I say more? Not all beaches allow open fires, but it’s definitely worth looking into. Click HERE to find out which beaches in California allow bonfires. Beach bonfires are a great way to entertain a group of friends, or to stay warm while enjoying the picturesque view. Who said bonfires are only good in the evening? Pack some hot dogs for a weenie-roast, and some marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers for a delicious sweet treat. Always make sure you put the fire out completely when you’re done.
2)      SHELL SEARCHING. If you’re looking for a fun craft to do, or just a way to fill a couple hours during the day, shell searching on the shores is a great option. Throw on some jeans or sweats, roll up the bottoms, and stroll along the coastline to find sand dollars, shells, and unique rocks. Take them home to create one-of-a-kind works of art, holiday gifts (inexpensive wink wink), or put them in a jar for a fun table display.
3)      JOG OR WALK ON THE BEACH. Grab a friend, or an i-Pod, and hit the sand! Brisk weather is perfect for exercising because you don’t get too hot, and the sand provides awesome resistance for a killer workout. Also, beach exercising when it’s gloomy is a great way to kick-start your day.
4)      PICNIC OR ROMANTIC DATE. As long as you’re dressed for the weather, the beach is a perfect place to snuggle up with your family, friends, or loved one(s). Make sure to pack your favorite food (or beverage), and extra sweatshirts and blankets.
5)      DOG PLAY! Many beaches, at least in Central California, allow dogs. Olde Port Beach in Avila Beach is one of them. Grab your pup and some of his favorite toys and take to the sand. You can go solo, or take the whole family, to enjoy this one!
6)   BEACH VOLLEYBALL. Need we say more. Sheer fun, even if you can't play well. ;)

Now you’ve got some ideas of ways to enjoy the beach when summer goes away. The sun will be back eventually, but in the meantime, enjoy everything else our wonderful surroundings have to offer!
